Corn in Egypt?

Genesis 41 and elsewhere mentions "corn" in the middle east: in Pharoah's dream; stored up by Joseph, etc.  Americans picture yellow maize or "Indian corn", a strictly American crop.  Any dictionary tells us "corn" means simply "grain."  Wheat, barley, any cereal grain is still called "corn" in its particular region of the English world.
