Matthew 6:7 - "But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking."
The model prayer given here is clearly not one to be repeated word for word, but used simply as a pattern. Verse 9, "After this manner therefore pray ye...." Not, "With these exact words daily."
Matthew 6:12 - "And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors."
This cannot rightly be called "The Lord's Prayer", for the Lord Jesus had no trespasses to forgive. The real Lord's prayer is in John 17, as the Lord Jesus wept and prayed.
Matthew 6:33 - But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you.
Cross reference Proverbs 22:4 - By humility and the fear of the LORD are riches, and honour, and life.
Matthew 7:1 - Judge not, that ye be not judged.
Put in context and compare scripture with scripture, for example: Verse 15 and following, "Beware of false prophets...ye shall know them by their fruits." John 7:24, "...Judge righteous judgment."
Matthew 7:5 - Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.
Cross reference Psalm 51:13, after confession and repentance, "Then will I teach transgressors thy ways...."
Matthew 7:13-14 - Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.
The gate / door: Luke 13:23-30; Matthew 25:1-13; John 10:9, "I am the door!"
The way: John 14:6.

Brief Notes in the Sermon on the Mount
Sermon outline on Matthew 5:16, from notes taken, preacher unknown:
Note at Matthew 5:23-24 - You have a responsibility to go to a brother that you have offended, Matthew 5:23-24. In Matthew 18:19 and Luke 17:3, You have a responsibility to go to a brother that has offended you. In either case, the responsibility to attempt to reconcile is always yours, whether the offended or the offender. Don't wait in pride for them to come to you. Same note at each passage.

- Let your light so shine before men - PUBLIC good works. Cross reference Philippians 2:15, "in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation, among whom ye shine as lights in the world."
- That they may see your good works - PURPOSE is testimony sake (but to point them to God, not ourselves).
- And glorify your Father which is in heaven - PRODUCT is God's glory. Cross reference Psalm 23:3, "he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake."

Luke 11:1 - Teach Us to Pray
Luke 11:1 - And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
"Teach us to pray" is "Teach us how to pray." It is not "teach us what to pray." Notice Matthew 6:9 says "After this manner therefore pray ye." Not "in this formula" or "with these words" but "after this manner." This model prayer is not given to be recited (Matthew 6:7-8) but to be emulated. The difference between recitation and emulation is as subtle but as vast as the difference between the religious heathen and the child of God.

Matthew 7:12 - The Golden Rule
Matthew 7:12 - Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
XRF - Matthew 22:39-40, where this same note could be applied.
The Golden Rule "is the law and the prophets." The New Testament teaches that the purpose of the law is to show us our lack, our unrighteousness - for we can never keep it. Galatians 3:10-25, etc. So if the Golden Rule "is the law" according to Christ, then its purpose is to show us that we are in violation of the law, for we can never perfectly keep this rule. It is also "the prophets" according to Christ. The purpose of the law is to show our lack, while the prophets point us to Christ to fulfill our lacking (e.g., Isaiah 53, etc). Christ is the only One Who kept the Golden Rule, yea more, when He died for us, loving His neighbor as Himself. So the Golden Rule "is the law and the prophets" because as "the law" it shows us our need and as "the prophets" it points us to Christ as the One Who meets that need. It is not a religion unto itself as the liberal would have it. It is a pointer to Christ for the one who realizes he is a sinner fallen short.
