Matthew 25:37-39 - Then shall the righteous answer him, saying, Lord, when saw we thee an hungred, and fed thee? or thirsty, and gave thee drink? When saw we thee a stranger, and took thee in? or naked, and clothed thee? Or when saw we thee sick, or in prison, and came unto thee?
NOTE: Notice the humility of the righteous. They don't even realize all the good they have worked. Contrast with the bold, brash bragging of the lost, who keep score of their deeds and point to their works as qualification for heaven (Matthew 7:22).
Matthew 7:22 - Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
NOTE: So anxious to inflate themselves, they stand before Jesus, Who truly did many wonderful works, and call their own works both "many" and "wonderful."

The Way, Truth, Life: John chapter 14 Notes
The Rapture in John 14:3 - And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.

Here in the middle deponent voice, same as "active" voice. I Thessalonians 4:17 is the passive part, ours, to "be caught up with Him."

Notes in John chapter 9
John 9:28 - Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.
Note here and at John 5:45 - Any true disciple of Moses will become one of Jesus Christ!
John 9:34 - They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.
"Born in sins," compare verse 2, "Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?"
John 9:37 - And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.
Note: Jesus subtly points out to the formerly blind man that he can now SEE the Son of God.

Unbelieving Disciples in John chapter 6
John 6:26 - Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled.
"They 'believed' on Him not as their Lord and Saviour, but as a wordly messiah to supply their needs and defeat their enemies." - D. Cloud.
These depart, John 6:66.
John 6:66 - From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him.
This type of disciple is explained in John 2:23-25; John 6:15; John 6:26; I Corinthians 15:2b; I John 2:19.

Search the Scriptures - Notes in John chapter 5
John 5:4 - For an angel went down at a certain season into the pool, and troubled the water: whosoever then first after the troubling of the water stepped in was made whole of whatsoever disease he had.
This verse is removed from the critical Greek text and cast in doubt or missing from modern translations. However, this verse explains the man's statement in John 5:7, "Sir, I have no man, when the water is troubled, to put me into the pool: but while I am coming, another steppeth down before me." Without verse 4, this man makes no sense. Verse 4 also explains why these people were waiting around the pool in the first place. This verse is no doubt original and is one of many places where John is explaining Jewish things to his Gentile readers. It was obviously removed because of unbelief in the ministry of angels.
John 5:14 - "...Behold, thou art made whole: sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee."
Note here and also at John 8:11 - Don't be foold by the Easy Prayerism crowd that "repentance" is not found in John! If they'd take the trouble to read John instead of word-searching it, they would see John 5:14 and John 8:11.
John 5:22 - For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son.
Important cross refs: John 5:27; Matthew 11:27; Matthew 28:18; John 3:35; John 17:2; Acts 17:31; II Timothy 4:1.
John 5:23a - "That all men should honour the Son, even as they honour the Father...."
Compare Isaiah 42:8, "My glory will I not give to another." JESUS IS GOD!!!
John 5:23b - "...He that honoureth not the Son honoureth not the Father, which hath sent him."
Cross ref: I John 2:23.
John 5:39 - Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.
"Search the scriptures" is indicative, not imperative. In other words, Jesus is saying, "You are in the habit of searching the scriptures to find eternal life. And they testify of Me."
"Jesus is the center, soul, heartbeat and blood of the entire Bible. If He were taken out of the Bible, it would be an empty, meaningless book." - Oliver B. Greene, "John, Volume 1", p. 310.
John 5:40 - And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life.
"The saddest verse in the Bible!" - VM
John 5:44 - How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?
Cross ref: Hebrews 11:6.
John 5:45 - Do not think that I will accuse you to the Father: there is one that accuseth you, even Moses, in whom ye trust.
Note: "Accuseth" is present tense, not future. Moses already accuses them in Deuteronomy 31:25-27.
"Moses, in whom ye trust." Note here and at John 9:28, Any true disciple of Moses will become one of Jesus Christ!
John 5:46 - For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.
To today's typically lost Lutheran / Methodist / Catholic: "Had ye believed Luther / Wesley / Simon Peter, ye would have believed Jesus, for he wrote of Jesus."
"Moses...wrote of me." - Genesis 3:15; Genesis 12:3; Genesis 18:18; Genesis 22:18; Genesis 49:10; Deuteronomy 18:15-18; Luke 24:44; John 1:45; Acts 26:22; etc.
John 5:47 - But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?
So how can someone who denies the first portion of Genesis (Creation through Flood) claim to believe in Christ?

Born of Water? Not Baptism!
Compare John 3:3 and John 3:5 - Without the new birth, a man cannot enter into the kingdom or even see (perceive / understand) it.
John 3:5 - Jesus answered, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born of water and [of] the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God.
BORN OF WATER IS NOT WATER BAPTISM!
Compare John 7:37-39, the water is the Holy Spirit. "Born of water and [of] the Spirit" - Notice "of" is in italics in the KJV text and there is no article ("the") in the Greek. Literally, "Born of water and Spirit" indicates this is one birth spoken of in this verse in the Greek.
Also, Nicodemus is reproved for not knowing about what Jesus spoke, John 3:10. But how could Nicodemus have known about Christian baptism? Why would Jesus reprove him for not knowing about baptism?
B. H. Carroll Explains "Born of Water" is Not Water Baptism:
John 3:7 - Marvel not....
Apparently, Nicodemus marvelled at this doctrine.
John 3:13 - And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the Son of man which is in heaven.
Notice the omni-presence of Christ; in heaven and earth simultaneously. This phrase stricken from the critical text and the modern versions, which weaken the deity of Christ.
John 3:14 - And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up.
Cross reference: Numbers 21:7-9.
"Even so MUST the Son of man be lifted up." - Must means it is absolutely necessary. Lifted up means lifted up on the cross; crucified. Defined in John 12:32-33. See also John 8:28.
John 3:16 - See "Man's Ruin" (or Romans volume 1) by Donald Grey Barnhouse, pp. 25-26 for excellent devotion on this verse.

B. H. Carroll Explains "Born of Water" is Not Water Baptism:
- Christ and Nicodemus discussed but two births, the natural birth and the spiritual birth, John 3:6. Whatever verse 5 means, it is one birth. Otherwise our chapter talks of three births-the natural birth, the baptism birth and the Spirit birth, which is contrary to the context.
- There is no article in the Greek before the words - not even before "Spirit." This is therefore one birth. "Born of water" is the same as "Born of Spirit."
- The context shows that the salvation invovled in John 3 is a salvation of grace and not of sacraments.
- The Lord rebukes Nicodemus for not understanding what He meant. Carroll says, "The censure lies in the fact that what is meant by 'born of water and Spirit' is clearly set forth in the Old Testament, which is so silent about baptism."
- "The phase, 'born of water and Spirit,' is but an expansion of the previous phrase, 'born from above.' It interprets and develops the first phrase, bringing out the two elements in regeneration, namely, cleansing and renewing. It is only when we lose sight of the cleansing element in regeneration that we are liable to go astray in interpreting the phrase 'born of water.' The matter is clearly set forth in Ezekiel 36:25, 26 which declares: 'Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and ye shall be clean; from all your filthiness and from all of your idols, will I cleanse you.' This is the cleansing element of regeneration. 'A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit....' And this is the renewing element."
- See Hebrews 9:13-14. "The Old Testament idea of clean water...typified the blood of Christ, applied in regeneration by the Holy Spirit.... With this Nicodemus ought to have been familiar. 'Born of water and spirit' simply means 'cleansed by the blood of Christ and renewed by the Holy Spirit.'"
- See similar language of washing in Titus 3:5; Ephesians 5:25-27.

Notes in Last Chapter of Luke
Luke 24:13 - And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.
Note: About a seven and a half mile walk.
This encounter with the resurrected Christ is mentioned briefly in Mark 16:12-13.
Luke 24:15-16 - And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.
Note: So often Jesus draws near and we know it not!
Luke 24:25 - Then he said unto them, O fools...
"Fools" here means simply unwise, unlearned. This is not the insulting word "fool" we are warned against using in Matthew 5:22. The Greek is entirely different.
Luke 24:27 - And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
"Concerning" means literally "all about." Notice the writings of Moses, and ALL the prophets and ALL the scriptures are things all about Christ. He is on every page of the Old Testament as well as the New.
Luke 24:28-29 - And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.
Notice, Jesus never forces Himself on anybody! He'll pass on if you please. But He never turns away when invited sincerely. "Pass me not, O gentle Saviour!" See Mark 6:48-50.
Luke 24:46 - And said unto them, This it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.
"Behoved" = was necessary.

Luke 22:31-32 - And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.
Notice the change in pronouns, "you" and "thee." "You" is always plural in KJV, "thee" is singular. Satan desired to sift all the 12, which he did, and one fell out as chaff (Judas). Jesus prayed specifically for Peter, "I have prayed for thee."
See also Job 1, Job 2, regarding Satan's designs on children of God and God's sovereignty over it.
Luke 22:33 - And he [Peter] said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.
Note: "Likewise said they all," - Mark 14:31.
"Peter loved the Lord and meant every word but knew not his own weakness." - Ironside on Luke, p. 654. Same note at Matthew and Mark.
See I Corinthians 10:12; Proverbs 16:18.
See full account of Peter's pride, Matthew 26:33-35; Mark 14:29-31.
"Let us be careful not to trust in our own strength, but distrusting ourselves to rely wholly on Him, that we may ever be true to the trust committed to us!" - Ironside, Addresses on Luke, p. 658.
Luke 22:44 - And being in an agony he [Jesus] prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.
Fulfilling Psalm 22:14.
Luke 22:45 - And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow, And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.
Notice, Even when exhausted from grief is no time to let our spiritual guard down.
This note also at Matthew 26:41 - "A man's regenerated spirit may have good intentions, but it must control his body." - Liberty Commentary. See Romans 12:1; Romans 6; Romans 7; Galatians 5:17.
Luke 22:49-50 - When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword? And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.
Notice, they asked the Lord, but did not wait for an answer!
See Christ's rebuke of Peter (the swordsman) in Matthew 26:52-54.
Notice how quickly we turn from being asleep when we should be alert, to being hyperactive when we should be quiet, passive and forbearing.
Luke 22:51 - And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.
"How busy we keep the Lord putting on ears that we in our mistaken zeal have cut off." - Ironside, Luke, p. 649.
Luke 22:54 - Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest's house. And Peter followed afar off.
Instead of keeping close to the Lord and being plainly identified by all as a follower. Peter's attachment to Jesus would not let him drift completely away, but he followed "afar off." And so the carnal Christian or backslider. Same note at Matthew 26:58.
Luke 22:56 - But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.
Unbelievers can spot a Christian. And this question is on their mind, "Art thou one of them, or one of us?"
Luke 22:65 - And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.
Speaking against Jesus can only be called "blasphemy" if Jesus is God!

Thou Hast Well Said - Notes in Luke chapter 20
Luke 20:13 - See note at Matthew 21:37 (here) and Mark 12:6 (here).
Luke 20:39 - Then certain of the scribes answering said, Master, thou hast well said.
"Thou hast well said." - This compliment did not buy the scribes any favor. Notice:
Jesus is not persuaded from the truth by compliments! Even the scribes confess this beforehand, Luke 20:21. Let us also be content to please God and not be concerned with pleasing men.

- The Saduccees deny the resurrection (Luke 20:27)
- Jesus proves the resurrection from the scriptures (Luke 20:37-38)
- The scribes, being Pharisees and believing in resurrection, compliment Jesus on this proof (Luke 20:39)
- Jesus still upbraids these same scribes in their presence (Luke 20:45-47)

They Will Reverence My Son
Mark 12:6 - Having yet therefore one son, his wellbeloved, he sent him also last unto them, saying, They will reverence my son.
"He sent him also last unto them...." - In Matthew 21:37, "last of all" - after all the other prophets. The final and complete revelation of God to man is in the incarnate Christ. See Hebrews 1:1-2. This note also made at Matthew, here.
Compare Luke 16:31 - "If they hear not Moses and the prophets, neither will they be persuaded, though one rose from the dead."

Mine Own Familiar Friend
Psalm 41:9 - Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.
Christ gives this as a prophecy of Himself and Judas Iscariot, the betrayor, John 13:8. As Christ gives it in the context of the footwashing at the Last Supper, it indicates that Judas partook of the Last Supper, contrary to the doctrine of Landmark Baptists and Baptist Briders who claim Judas departed before the ordinance was given.
By the way - and this is not a note for your Bible, just a side note related to this verse: The claim that Judas had already went out that night, after the meal but before the bread and cup were passed - this is one of the Landmark Baptists' and Baptist Briders' chief arguments for "closed communion" of local church members only. Visiting Christians (maybe from out of town or whatever) are not allowed to partake in those churches. I am not necessarily against practicing closed communion, but this argument in favor of it falls flat. Judas was present at the institution of the Lord's Table; the Gospel of Luke is clear on that (Luke 22:19-21) and this prophecy, quoted by the Lord Jesus in context, also indicates it.

Jesus Speaks in 40th Psalm
Psalm 40:1 - I waited patiently for the LORD; and he inclined unto me, and heard my cry.
Keyword: "Patiently." Not just "wait upon the Lord," but patiently!
Jesus Christ Speaks - Psalm 40:6-8 - Sacrifice and offering thou didst not desire; mine ears hast thou opened: burnt offering and sin offering hast thou not required. Then said I, Lo, I come: in the volume of the book it is written of me, I delight to do thy will, O my God: yea, thy law is within my heart.
This is Messiah speaking to the Father, as quoted in Hebrews 10:5-10, to give Himself as sacrifice and put an end to the animal sacrifice. In the Old Testament Greek text, "mine ears hast thou opened" is given differently as "a body hast thou prepared me," as later quoted in Hebrews, a stunning prophecy of Christ's coming in the flesh to offer Himself as sacrifice.
Psalm 40:9 - I have preached righteousness in the great congregation: lo, I have not refrained my lips, O LORD, thou knowest.
Application: "Whether they believe in You or not, You know I have told them." And so Ezekiel 3:19.

More Comments on Olivet Discourse
Sermon title / outline from Matthew 24:4-14: "Namers, Claimers, Framers, Blamers, Lamers, Gamers & Proclaimers."
Matthew 24:13 - Endurance is not for salvation but is proof of saving faith, Colossians 1:23.
Matthew 25:41 - "Everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels." Not prepared for man, because it was not God's plan for man to go there; and truly no man has to end up there.

There Is NO Rapture in Matthew
Matthew chapters 24 and 25 are called the "Olivet Discourse" because Jesus gave the discourse sitting on the Mount of Olives. Many people try to find the Rapture of the Church in these chapters, but it is NOT there. Finding it there will lead you to a mid-tribulation or a post-tribulation Rapture doctrine, which is inconsistent with the rest of the New Testament on the subject.
In Matthew chapter 24, Jesus is speaking of things during the Tribulation period, after the Rapture has already happened. Then at the end of the Tribulation, Jesus will return to Earth to rule and to reign for 1,000 years, so all the references here to his coming are references to that event, not to the Rapture. It would be helpful to mark in your Bible all the places in the chapter that indicate this.
Of particular note is the emphasis on Israel in the events of the chapter, so we will note this as well. Why does that matter? Because after the Rapture, God resumes His program for the nation of Israel. The Tribulation is "the time of Jacob's trouble." The emphasis in this chapter is on Israel, not the Church.
Verse 5 - "saying, I am Christ." Christ means Messiah. Many will come, presenting themselves to Israel as Messiah.
Verse 7-8 - "...Famines, and pestilences, and earthquakes, in divers places. All these are the beginning of sorrows." The beginning of the Tribulation period, during the first 3.5 years, as recorded in the Revelation.
Verse 9 - "ye shall be hated of all nations for my name's sake." "Nations" tells us this is dealing with people groups. Israel, as a people or nation, will be hated by other nations.
Verses 15-19 - Events are clearly in and around Jerusalem. This is the halfway mark of the Tribulation, 3.5 years into it.
Verse 20 - Mention of fleeing on the Sabbath. Still in the context of Israel. This fleeing of Israel, halfway through the Tribulation, takes place in Revelation 12:6.
Verse 21 - The last 3.5 years is called "great tribulation."
Verses 23 and 24 - Again, mention of false Messiahs to Israel.
Verse 27 and following - Obviously not the Rapture, but Christ's visible and triumphant return to the earth to rule.
Verses 40 & 41 - "two in the field...one taken" etc. This is commonly misunderstood as the Rapture. These are not taken in the Rapture, but taken away to judgment. Context is from verse 37 forward, those taken by the Flood were taken in judgment, not to salvation. See I Thessalonians 5:3.
There is NO Rapture in Matthew chapter 24 !!!! It is about the events after the Rapture through the return of Christ to the earth. To my recollection, there is absolutely nothing in the entire book of Matthew mentioning the Rapture. After all, Matthew was written to the Jews, the nation of Israel, presenting Jesus as their King and Messiah. The Rapture is not for Israel but for the Church. The Tribulation is for Israel, to prepare her to receive Jesus as Messiah and King.

The Psalm of the Cross
Psalm 22:1 - "My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?" In quoting the first line, Jesus invokes this entire psalm and applies to Himself. Matthew 27:46; Mark 15:34.
God turned His face away from Jesus because our sin was upon Him. Habakkuk 1:3; II Corinthians 5:21.
This entire psalm is fulfilled in Christ's crucifiction. If your Bible does not have center column cross references, find one that does and transfer to your margin any references to the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke or John.
Selected references and additional notes:
Verse 6 - Isaiah 53:3.
Verse 14 - I am poured out like water, and all my bones are out of joint: my heart is like wax; it is melted in the midst of my bowels.
"Poured out like water" - the sweat in Luke 22:44. And "my heart is like wax..." The pericardium burst in John 19:34.
"Bones out of joint" - as on the cross. Out of joint but not broken, John 19:36.
Verse 22 - Quoted as if spoken by Jesus, Hebrews 2:12.

Luke 11:1 - Teach Us to Pray
Luke 11:1 - And it came to pass, that, as he was praying in a certain place, when he ceased, one of his disciples said unto him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John also taught his disciples.
"Teach us to pray" is "Teach us how to pray." It is not "teach us what to pray." Notice Matthew 6:9 says "After this manner therefore pray ye." Not "in this formula" or "with these words" but "after this manner." This model prayer is not given to be recited (Matthew 6:7-8) but to be emulated. The difference between recitation and emulation is as subtle but as vast as the difference between the religious heathen and the child of God.

Matthew 7:12 - The Golden Rule
Matthew 7:12 - Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets.
XRF - Matthew 22:39-40, where this same note could be applied.
The Golden Rule "is the law and the prophets." The New Testament teaches that the purpose of the law is to show us our lack, our unrighteousness - for we can never keep it. Galatians 3:10-25, etc. So if the Golden Rule "is the law" according to Christ, then its purpose is to show us that we are in violation of the law, for we can never perfectly keep this rule. It is also "the prophets" according to Christ. The purpose of the law is to show our lack, while the prophets point us to Christ to fulfill our lacking (e.g., Isaiah 53, etc). Christ is the only One Who kept the Golden Rule, yea more, when He died for us, loving His neighbor as Himself. So the Golden Rule "is the law and the prophets" because as "the law" it shows us our need and as "the prophets" it points us to Christ as the One Who meets that need. It is not a religion unto itself as the liberal would have it. It is a pointer to Christ for the one who realizes he is a sinner fallen short.
