Exodus 18:23 - If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so....
Always good when giving advice or counsel to impress that your advice not infallible, so do as the Lord leads. In this case, God confirmed Jethro's counsel, Numbers chapter 11.

Notes in Matthew Chapter 14
Note at Matthew 14:1-2 - How many today have "heard of the fame of Jesus" but like Herod totally misunderstand Him. They need to hear not of the fame but of the truth of Jesus! He is not to be a fad or a fashion or a cultural icon. He is the Way, the Truth, the Life.
Note throughout chapter - Notice how Herod is wrongly motivated to please, impress and placate others: "For Herodias' sake," v. 3; "feared the multitude," v. 5; "promised with an oath," v. 7; "and them which sat with him," v. 9. See also Acts 12:3, "because he saw it pleased the Jews." Herod therefore rightly called a "fox" by Jesus in Luke 13:32.
Note at 14:15-21 - The only miracle of Jesus recorded by all four Gospels (besides the Resurrection).
Matthew 14:21 - And they that had eaten were about five thousand men, beside women and children.
Not the "feeding of the five thousand," but more like the ten or twenty thousand.

Notes in Genesis Chapter 34
Note at Genesis 34:19 - The most honorable man in the land was a fornicator and virgin seducer, possibly a rapist. Does not say much for the others.
Note at Genesis 34:30-31 - On importance of the father's leadership: Jacob's sons took a stand when their father would not. But without their father's leadership, they make a mess.

Notes in Genesis Chapter Sixteen
Genesis 16:5 - And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.
Note: Sarai's idea, but Abram responsible as ultimate decision maker. Wife not responsible before God for decisions husband makes.
Cross reference Genesis 3:17, "Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree...."

Notes in Genesis Chapter Thirteen
Genesis 13:7-8 - And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram's cattle and the herdmen of Lot's cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land. And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.
Note the importance of unity among brethren: (1) For protection against the Canaanite, etc, (2) For a testimony toward them. We dwell "in the midst of a crooked and perverse nation" among whom we must shine as lights, Philippians 2:15, while united together, Philippians 2:1-4. We need protection from them, Philippians 3:2, and a witness toward them, Philippians 2:16.
Genesis 13:9 - ...if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.
Example of voluntary submission by a leader, Ephesians 5:21; I Peter 5:5; Acts 6:1-6 (and see related note there).
Abram led in seeing need for change, but submitted to nephew's decision on the details.
Genesis 13:10 - And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.
Lot's downfall begins with the lust of the eyes, and walking by sight, not by faith.
Genesis 13:12 - Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.
Example of gradual decline: Lot at first only pitched his tent toward Sodom; then later he dwelt in Sodom (Genesis 14:12); then later still he is a civic leader sitting at the gate of Sodom (Genesis 19:1); by now he is completely ensnared in Sodom, calling the most wicked Sodomites his "brethren" (Genesis 19:7), giving his daughters in marriage to them (Genesis 19:14), unwilling to give up Sodom (Genesis 19:15-16).

Notes on Woman's Judgment in the Curse
Genesis 3:16 - ...and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
To understand this, compare Genesis 4:7 - "If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him."
Sin's desire is to rule over a man, but that man is given the task of ruling over sin. So likewise then in Genesis 3:16, woman's desire after the curse is to rule over her husband, but he is still to be the ruler. Part of her judgment for her role in the Fall is that she is no longer content to be the help meet for him; she desires to rule him. Feminism, marital strife, lack of submission - these are all a curse on the woman. She thinks she will be happy if she rules over the man but in fact she will be more miserable in that case.

King Josiah an Example of James 1:21-25
RECEIVE WITH MEEKNESS THE ENGRAFTED WORD
II Chronicles 34:14-19 - And when they brought out the money that was brought into the house of the LORD, Hilkiah the priest found a book of the law of the LORD given by Moses. And Hilkiah answered and said to Shaphan the scribe, I have found the book of the law in the house of the LORD. And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan. And Shaphan carried the book to the king [Josiah, about 26 years old, around 624 B.C.], and brought the king word back again, saying, All that was committed to thy servants, they do it. And they have gathered together the money that was found in the house of the LORD, and have delivered it into the hand of the overseers, and to the hand of the workmen. Then Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying, Hilkiah the priest hath given me a book. And Shaphan read it before the king. And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the law, that he rent his clothes.
II Chronicles 34:27 - Because thine heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before God, when thou heardest his words against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, and humbledst thyself before me, and didst rend thy clothes, and weep before me; I have even heard thee also, saith the LORD.
BUT BE YE DOERS OF THE WORD, AND NOT HEARERS ONLY
II Chronicles 34:29-33 - Then the king sent and gathered together all the elders of Judah and Jerusalem. And the king went up into the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, and the priests, and the Levites, and all the people, great and small: and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant that was found in the house of the LORD. And the king stood in his place, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep his commandments, and his testimonies, and his statutes, with all his heart, and with all his soul, to perform the words of the covenant which are written in this book. And he caused all that were present in Jerusalem and Benjamin to stand to it. And the inhabitants of Jerusalem did according to the covenant of God, the God of their fathers. And Josiah took away all the abominations out of all the countries that pertained to the children of Israel, and made all that were present in Israel to serve, even to serve the LORD their God. And all his days they departed not from following the LORD, the God of their fathers.
A DOER OF THE WORK, THIS MAN SHALL BE BLESSED IN HIS DEED
II Chronicles 34:28 - Behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil that I will bring upon this place, and upon the inhabitants of the same. So they brought the king word again.
II Kings 23:25 - And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses; neither after him arose there any like him.

Acts 6:1-6
Acts 6:1-6 - "...then the twelve called the multitude of the disciples unto them, and said...."
Example of mutual submission, Ephesians 5:21; I Peter 5:5. This by the leadership:
(a) Acknowledge the problem, not ignore it.
(b) Address the problem, not lay it aside or kick it back to the complainants.
(c) Lead in the adoption of a solution - including in this case taking on a new and necessary duty.
