Wise man notes at James 3:13

James 3:13 - Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him shew out of a good conversation his works with meekness of wisdom.

("Conversation" means conduct, lifestyle).

If modern Christians wrote this verse, it would be apt to say instead, "Who is wise...?  Let him tell...." - VM

"Only wise ways make one's wise words worthwhile." - VM

James has an annoying (to our flesh) habit of challenging our thinking:  "You think you...?  Let me show you what that really looks like!"  On trials, 1:2-4; on the Scripture, 1:21-25; on religion, 1:26-27; on saving faith, 2:14-26; on wisdom, 3:13.  Ironically, being willing to have our notions challenged is a step to wisdom, Proverbs 3:5, 23:4, 26:12; Isaiah 5:21; Romans 12:16; I Corinthians 3:18.

Jephthah Did Not Sacrifice Daughter

Notes on keeping straight the Ammonites, Amorites and Moabites in Judges 11:

Ammonites and Moabites are descendants of Lot (Genesis 19:36-38) and often confederate together.

Amorites had invaded into Ammonite and Moabite land and conquered it before the Exodus of Israel. Israel then conquered the Amorites when their kings fought against them after the Exodus (Numbers chapter 21). So the Ammonite king is wrong in Judges 11:13 and Jephthah corrects his history in Judges 11:14-23.

Judges 11:26 - Clue as to the timing of this chapter, about 300 years after the conquering of Canaan by Joshua.

Jephthah did NOT sacrifice his daughter's life:

Jephthah's vow, Judges 11:31 - "Then it shall be, that whatsoever cometh forth of the doors of my house to meet me, when I return in peace from the children of Ammon, shall surely be the LORD's, [or] I will offer it up for a burnt offering.

Notice KJV translator margin, "OR I will offer it up" instead of "AND I will offer it up." Whatever or whoever first came forth would be the LORD's. If an animal lawful to sacrifice, then it would be sacrificed. If a person, he or she would be consecrated to the LORD.

Jephthah's daughter was therefore consecrated to the LORD, that she would not marry. So she bewailed her virginity, not her impending death, Judges 11:37-38. Not being able to bear children was a major source of disappointment for a Jewish girl, in a society where children were so prized and every woman wanted to be the one through whom the Messiah came forth. And this a disappointment to Jephthah, for his line would end with her, his only child, so his grief in Judges 11:35.

This fact of the vow confirmed - not that he offered her up, but explained that "she knew no man", Judges 11:39. She was probably set apart from society to live alone under her father's care. And the daughters of Israel went yearly to visit with her, Judges 11:39-40 (note KJV marginal translation, "to talk with her" a more clear translation).

Jepthah is named in the Faith Hall of Fame in Hebrews 11:32. This man would not be a hero of faith if he had actually bargained with God with the life of his daughter. His vow is more like the vow of faith of Hannah, I Samuel 1:11, which God honored.

John Chapter 1 Notes

John 1:1 - In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

"WORD" = Greek "LOGOS: word, expression, concept." Vine's Dictionary says, "the 'Word,' the personal manifestation, not of a part of the Divine nature, but of the whole Deity."

Jesus is the Word / Expression of God, very God in totality. He reveals God to man: Matthew 1:23; John 10:30; Philippians 2:6; Colossians 1:15; Hebrews 1:3, etc.

John calls Jesus the Word: John 1:1; John 1:14; I John 1:1; I John 5:7; Revelation 19:13.

John 1:2 - The same was in the beginning with God.

Compare Deuteronomy 32:39 - "There is no god with me." Jehovah's Witness Bible says, "The word was a god." Contradicts Deut. 32:39. Jesus IS God!

The eternal nature of Christ: Micah 5:2; John 17:5; Colossians 1:17; Hebrews 13:8; I John 1:1-2; I John 5:20; Revelation 1:8; Revelation 1:11; Revelation 2:8; Revelation 21:6; Revelation 22:13.

John 1:4 - In him was life; and the life was the light of men.

This note at John 14:6, "I am...the LIFE" - John 1:4; John 3:15-16; John 3:36; John 5:21; John 5:26; John 6:33; John 6:51; John 6:57: John 6:68; John 10:10; John 11:25; John 14:6; John 14:19; John 17:3; Acts 3:15; Romans 6:23; Colossians 3:4; Galatians 2:20; II Timothy 1:1; I John 1:1-2; I John 5:11-12.

John 1:11 - He came unto his own, and his own received him not.

THE RESPONSE OF THE JEWS: (1) Rejected His prophets and preachers, Matthew 23:37. (2) Refused His tender love, Matthew 23:37. (3) Resisted the Holy Ghost, Acts 7:51.

John 1:14 - ...(and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father,)...

Compare Isaiah 42:8 - "...my glory will I not give to another." Jesus is not another because Jesus IS God!

John 1:21 - ...Art thou that prophet?

"That prophet" that should come, promised Deuteronomy 18:15-18. This prophet is Christ: John 6:14; John 7:40; Acts 3:22-24; Acts 7:37.

Notes in Last Chapter of Luke

Luke 24:13 - And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

Note: About a seven and a half mile walk.

This encounter with the resurrected Christ is mentioned briefly in Mark 16:12-13.

Luke 24:15-16 - And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them. But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

Note: So often Jesus draws near and we know it not!

Luke 24:25 - Then he said unto them, O fools...

"Fools" here means simply unwise, unlearned. This is not the insulting word "fool" we are warned against using in Matthew 5:22. The Greek is entirely different.

Luke 24:27 - And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

"Concerning" means literally "all about." Notice the writings of Moses, and ALL the prophets and ALL the scriptures are things all about Christ. He is on every page of the Old Testament as well as the New.

Luke 24:28-29 - And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further. But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

Notice, Jesus never forces Himself on anybody! He'll pass on if you please. But He never turns away when invited sincerely. "Pass me not, O gentle Saviour!" See Mark 6:48-50.

Luke 24:46 - And said unto them, This it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day.

"Behoved" = was necessary.

The Sycomore Tree

Luke 19:4 - And he [Zacchaeus] ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him [Jesus]: for he was to pass that way.

Sycomore - not like our sycamore tree today. The sycomore is a tree with low, wide branches, bearing edible but untasty figs. Easy to climb and often planted by roadsides for the benefit of the poor, the sycomore is associated with the poor, who gathered and ate the figs, like in Amos 7:14. Here, a rich man climbs the tree of poor men.

Zacchaeus was not ashamed to lay aside his station in life, run before the crowd like a little boy, and climb into the tree of the poor, all in order to see Jesus. "I wish there were more of us who did not mind being laughed at if only what we did helped us to see Jesus." (Maclaren).

Notes Through Deuteronomy (Part 1)

The title "Deuteronomy" means "Second Law." This is the book of the Law restated.

Deuteronomy 1:39 - Moreover your little ones, which ye said should be a prey, and your children, which in that day had no knowledge between good and evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them will I give it, and they shall possess it.

Note: This is a hint of God's mercy for the innocent young. Many parents of departed infants take hope of seeing them again. See also II Samuel 12:21-23; Isaiah 7:15-16; Jonah 4:11; Romans 9:11.

Deuteronomy 4:2 - Ye shall not add unto the word which I command you, neither shall ye diminish ought from it, that ye may keep the commandments of the LORD your God which I command you.

Adding or removing from the word of God, cross refs: Deuteronomy 12:32; Joshua 1:7; Proverbs 30:6; Ecclesiastes 12:13; Revelation 22:18-19.

Deuteronomy 4:7-8 - For what nation is there so great, who hath God so nigh unto them....

Cross ref: Psalm 33:12

Lesson Outline on Idolatry

  • God Proves Futility of Idolatry: Deuteronomy 4:14-19

  • God's Judgment on National Idolatry: Deuteronomy 4:23-28

  • God's Mercy on Repentant Idolater: Deuteronomy 4:29-31.

Deuteronomy 4:12 & 15 - Cross reference John 4:24.

Deuteronomy 4:39 - Know therefore this day, and consider it in thine heart, that the LORD he is God in heaven above, and upon the earth beneath: there is none else.

"Know and consider" - Fellowship with God requires more than simple mental assent. It requires a heart action.

Cross refs: Psalm 46:10; Psalm 100:3.

Sparse Notes in Leviticus

I was saving all my notes for Leviticus to post at once, since they were so sparse. It turns out my only Bible notes written in Leviticus at this time were both in chapter 11 and both written in my old Bible.

Leviticus 11:20 - All fowls that creep, going upon all four, shall be an abomination unto you.

Fowls = winged bugs.

Leviticus 11:44 - For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy...

Quoted as a New Testament Christian principal, I Peter 1:15-16.

Notes on Moses' Calling

Exodus 2:11 - And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens: and he spied an Egyptian smiting an Hebrew, one of his brethren.

Moses here about 40 years old, already knew his calling as deliverer, Acts 7:22-25; Hebrews 11:24-27.

Exodus 3:13 - And Moses said unto God, Behold, when I come unto the children of Israel, and shall say unto them, The God of your fathers hath sent me unto you; and they shall say to me, What is his name? what shall I say unto them?

Not an objection (yet) but a valid question.  Moses had already been asked, "Who made thee a prince and a judge over us?" and he had no answer then.  (Exodus 2:14).

Note at Exodus 3:14 - "I AM THAT I AM" / "I AM hath sent me unto you."

Jehovah, commonly LORD in small caps in the Bible text, means "I AM" - the self existent, self sustaining, all sufficient, unchanging One.  Jesus Christ applied it to Himself, John 8:58 (so Jews tried to stone Him for claiming deity).  Jesus has these attributes of this name: Hebrews 13:8; Revelation 1:4, 1:8, 1:17, 4:8.

Sixteenth Psalm's Prophecy of Christ

Psalm 16:10 - For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption.

Christ is God's "Holy One", not David the psalmist.  This verse quoted in New Testament to prove Resurrection of Christ: Acts 2:27-31; Acts 13:35-38.  Since David's body saw corruption, apostles proved this verse a prophecy of Christ.

"Hell" - the unseen place of the dead, corresponding to the Greek "hades."  Jesus spent 3 days in the Paradise / Abraham's bosom side of hades.  His soul was not left there, neither did His body see corruption.

Additional study on hades - Luke 16:19-31.  On Christ's time there: Luke 23:42-43; I Peter 3:18-20.  Christ emptied the Paradise side ("led captivity captive") at His ascension: Ephesians 4:7-10.

Brief Notes on Word "Virgin" or "Young Woman"

Isaiah 7:14 - Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign; Behold, a virgin shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

"Virgin" is the Hebrew word "almah."  The Revised Standard Version translated it here as "young woman."  It was claimed by the translators that is what the word actually means.  If true, this removes a clear prophecy of Christ.  Does it mean "virgin" or does it simply mean "young woman."  The apostle Matthew answers.

Matthew 1:22-23 - Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.

Matthew quotes Isaiah but puts it in Greek instead of Hebrew.  He uses the Greek word "parthenos" which can only mean virgin.  There is no other meaning.

Matthew, a 1st Century Jew, certainly knew Hebrew language and customes better than the 20th Century translators of the Revised Standard Version.

The same God that inspired the Hebrew of Isaiah 7:14 inspired its Greek translation here.

Sermon Outline for James 1:21-25

James 1:21-25 skeletal sermon outline.  No title yet.  To be preached (Lord willing) on Sunday morning October 9, 2011 at Providence Independent Baptist Church.  Possibly split into two parts, for 10/9 and 10/16.

Message thrust: These verses detail what we are to do about hearing the word of God.  They are instructions for BEFORE, DURING and AFTER hearing the word.  This applies when we come to church, or read the Bible in private devotion, or any time the word of God is received.

BEFORE HEARING THE WORD - v. 21a - Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness.

This is preparation for hearing the word of God.  This is to put is in the right attitude for receiving the word.

Explain and illustrate words and phrases: "lay apart", "filthiness" and "superfluity of naughtiness."

Compare I Peter 2:1-3 for the same ideas - put these things aside in order to be ready for the word of God.

Reword Matthew Henry quote about laying them apart versus simply restraining them.  Give examples or illustrations to show the difference.

DURING HEARING THE WORD - v. 21b - and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.

Word study: Receive.  Emphasize the necessity of actively participating in taking in the word of God.

By the way, when we speak of the word of God, we are talking about the Bible.  Very brief reminder of inspiration, etc.

The attitude during receiving the word: meekness.  Expand on how such attitude is absolutely necessary.

How the word works in our lives: explanation of "engrafted" and brief illustration to explain the word.

The power of the word: "able" equals Greek "dunamis" / English Dynamite.  If the word has the power to save your soul, then it has the power to continue working in your soul after you are saved.  Expand.

AFTER HEARING THE WORD - vv. 22-25.  But be ye doers of the word and not hearers only....

What to do after you have heard the word.

James 1:17 Word Study - Every Good Gift

James 1:17 - Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above....

GIFT - Two different Greek words translated "gift" in this verse.  The first, DOSIS, is the act of giving.  The second, DOREMA, is the actual thing that is given.

An expanded translation: All good giving and every perfect gift is from above.

Pulpit quip: "Whatever God gives us is perfect and even the WAY He gives it to us is perfect."

Cross references: As for God, His way is perfect - II Samuel 22:31;  Psalm 18:30.

Philippians 4:15

Philippians 4:15 - ...no church communicated with me as concerning giving and receiving, but ye only.

COMMUNICATED = PARTNERED

VM

Philippians 4:14

Philippians 4:14 - Notwithstanding ye have well done, that ye did communicate with my affliction.

YE HAVE WELL DONE: Supporting missions is the right thing to do!  III John 5-8.  If we want to hear Christ say, "Well done..." then we support missions.

COMMUNICATE WITH = SHARE IN.  It is not just their grace that we share in when we support missions (Phil. 1:7), but also their afflictions.

Philippians 1:9

Philippians 1:9 - And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;

Knowledge = gaining information.
Judgment = applying information properly.

VM

Philippians 1:7

Philippians 1:7 - ...and in the defence and confirmation of the gospel...
a) Not in Paul's self defence, even considering vv. 14-17, but in defence of the Gospel.  The fate of the apostle is of little concern; the fate of the Gospel was and is everything.

Philippians 1:7 - ...ye all are partakers of my grace.
b) Partakers: sharers in; joint share-holders.
c) Paul's grace: Ephesians 3:7-9.
d) The financial supporters of missions and preachers have a share in their labours & rewards (cf. Philippians 4:17).
