Notes in Matthew Chapter Nine

Matthew 9:6 - But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power on earth to forgive sins, (then saith he to the sick of the palsy,) Arise, take up thy bed, and go unto thine house.

Miracles are always confirmatory signs of the message and the messenger.

Matthew 9:16-17 - No man putteth a piece of new cloth unto an old garment, for that which is put in to fill it up taketh from the garment, and the rent is made worse.  Neither do men put new wine into old bottles: else the bottles break, and the wine runneth out, and the bottles perish: but they put new wine into new bottles, and both are preserved.

The new dispensation "cannot be fitted into the forms of the old" (Liberty Commentary) or the beauty of BOTH will be lost.  See also Luke 5:39.

Matthew 9:36 - But when he saw the multitudes, he was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.

Note: A burden for people's spiritual needs must result in compassion for them.

Matthew 9:37-38 - Don't let the chapter break into chapter ten break up the context.  "Send forth labourers into his harvest" (9:38) is what He began to do in 10:1 and following.  Context more clear in Luke 10.
