Notes in the Fourth Chapter of Genesis

Genesis 4:3 - "...Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering..."

Remember the ground had been cursed, Genesis 3:17.  Why should God accept this offering?  What else is often offered in sacrifice to God from that which is cursed by Him (gambling winnings, dishonest earnings, etc)?

Genesis 4:5a - "But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect."

Hebrews 9:22 - And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission.

Proverbs 15:8 - The sacrifice of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD: but the prayer of the upright is his delight.

Cain was not saved, I John 3:12.

Genesis 4:23-24 - The first recorded killing in self defense.  Such a killing is righteous and not to be avenged.

Genesis 4:25 - And Adam knew his wife again; and she bare a son, and called his name Seth: For God, said she, hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel, whom Cain slew.

There is no reason to believe that other children were not born in the interval.  How many years had passed between Abel's birth and death?  Adam and Eve were fruitful and multiplying in this time, as God had commanded, not sitting around twiddling thumbs and waiting for Abel to die so they could replace him.  Seth is simply the third birth recorded by name, because his line continues through the flood to the Redeemer.  Adam "begat sons and daughters" who are never named - in fact not one daughter is ever named, Genesis 5:5.  Objections such as, "Where did Cain get his wife" are purely ridiculous.
